WQED Pittsburgh, honored with the 2007 and 2006 Mid-Atlantic Emmy® Award for Station Excellence, was founded in 1954 as the nation's first community-supported broadcaster. WQED creates, produces and distributes quality programs, products and services to engage, inform, educate and entertain the public within its community and around the world. WQED Pittsburgh is one of the first broadcasters in the country to be fully high-definition (HD) in its studio and field production capabilities. It is the parent company of WQED-TV (PBS); WQED: The Neighborhood Channel; WQED: The Create Channel; Classical WQED-FM 89.3/Pittsburgh; WQEJ-FM 89.7/Johnstown; local and national television and radio productions; WQED Interactive (www.wqed.org); and The WQED Education Department.

Account Executive

The Account Executive is responsible for generating revenue for WQED Multimedia by developing and furthering relationships with clients to insure continued support for the organization's broadcast products and services.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and present proposals to meet pre-determined needs of client for presentations.
  • Write contract request forms.
  • Develop schedule of announcements and deliver to FM and Production Assistant for traffic placement.
  • Write announcements for client approval and deliver to FM traffic person and/or Production Assistant along with video components.
  • Develop promotional and/or underwriting ideas for clients.
  • Collect payment from clients.
  • Generate new business through targeting prospects.
  • Maintain up-to-date information of broadcast businesses as well as client business.
  • Develop a list of targeted media and matching prospect's needs with WQED program/strategies.
  • Contact prospective client – pre-determine needs and set up appointments.
  • Volunteer for station events and perform other company projects as needed.

Required education and skills:

  • Associate's Degree or equivalent experience is required. A Bachelor's Degree is preferred.
  • One year of sales and marketing experience, preferably in the broadcast industry, is required.
  • Candidate must have a working knowledge of sales techniques and broadcast industry sales along with excellent customer service and social media skills.

Assistant Editor (part-time)

WQED's assistant editor position offers a great opportunity to utilize existing skills while learning from an established, award-winning production team. This position is responsible for the advance preparation for each scheduled edit. The person in this position works with the interactive team to populate the website with completed video projects, performs post-edit duties including routine maintenance on the editing systems and keeps updated archives of all production content.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Loading all footage into the editing system using raw video provided by producers.
  • Converting any footage provided on unsuitable format to a format that is compatible with WQED editing system.
  • Importing graphics such as scanned photos, lower thirds, or animations provided by the graphics department.
  • Importing audio narration needed for projects
  • Organizing, labeling and maintaining media in an orderly fashion
  • Importing any music provided
  • Creating a string out (similar to a rough cut) of the sequence to be edited, guided by the script provided by the producer.
  • Filling out a Music Cue Sheet for all edited material.
  • Archiving edited or raw material as requested.
  • Converting digital files for internet viewing.
  • Working with interactive team to populate website with video content.
  • Outputting projects to other formats as requested.
  • Managing media to insure that nothing is deleted before its time, while monitoring the availability of space in the system.
  • System maintenance/cleaning: various tasks to keep system running smoothly.

Required education and skills:

  • High School Diploma required.
  • 3 months to a year of experience required.
  • AVID experience is strongly preferred but not mandatory. Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite is also useful. 
  • Must be willing to work evenings and weekends.

Digital Media Account Executive

WQED is seeking an experienced sales person to drive digital revenue. The Digital Media Account Executive’s primary responsibility will be to generate digital media revenue for WQED Multimedia by developing new customers, as well as exploring and identifying digital/social/mobile opportunities for new/existing clients. The Digital Media Account Executive will also be responsible for developing and furthering relationships with clients to insure continued and new support for the organization's broadcast products and services.

  • Prospect for new business and build a full pipeline of digital sales prospects.
  • Identify and target opportunities from our built-in digital audience/digital inventory that is growing every day.
  • Develop and manage revenue producing relationships with clients and agencies for traditional television and radio sales.
  • Serve as a digital services expert for clients in order to assist in revenue growth.
  • Analyze client marketing goals and develop needs based digital solutions.
  • Oversee digital campaign execution and analysis to insure clients’ needs are met.
  • Develop and present proposals to meet pre-determined needs of client for presentations.
  • Assist other Account Executives in developing digital sales ideas for their clients.
  • In addition to Digital, develop sales ideas for clients.
  • Generate new business through targeting prospects.
  • Complete contract templates and collect payment from clients.
  • Volunteer for station events and perform other company projects as needed.

Required education and skills:

  • An experienced sales representative (minimum 3 years), with outstanding digital knowledge and experience in the broadcast industry overall, is required.
  • Associate's Degree or equivalent experience is required. A Bachelor's Degree is preferred.
  • Active and proficient in social media sales – Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc.
  • Knowledge of the digital audience, apps and other devices.
  • Knowledge of the market and advertising community and a proven record of sales accomplishments are essential.
  • Candidate must have a working knowledge of sales techniques and broadcast industry sales along with excellent customer service and social media skills.
  • We are seeking a self-motivated, creative and a clear and responsible communicator, a dynamic presenter and an excellent time manager.
  • Knowledge of Google Double Click, Facebook Ads, Microsoft Office Products required; some knowledge of Access and Photoshop is helpful.

Maintenance Technician

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Ability to maintain and repair transmitters, satellite receivers, cameras, switchers, graphic systems, audio equipment, videotape systems, routers, intercoms, monitors and other transmission, distribution and production equipment associated with a broadcast television and radio station
  • Ability to read and understand technical drawings and manuals
  • Compliant with required safety and technical standards
  • Minimum Qualifications:
  • Five (5) years experience in broadcast television and radio
  • Associate's degree in electronics and/or completion of a certificate program in electronics from an accredited technical institute
  • Computer proficiency in hardware, software and networking
  • Proficient in test equipment for use in installation, maintenance and repair of broadcast systems

Skills and Abilities

  • Skill in interpreting and diagnosing operational/technical equipment problems
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Must be able to work outside of normal business hours, including mornings, nights and weekends
  • Remain current on the developments and applications of state of the art broadcast engineering technology
