WQED Pittsburgh, honored with the 2007 and 2006 Mid-Atlantic Emmy® Award for Station Excellence, was founded in 1954 as the nation's first community-supported broadcaster. WQED creates, produces and distributes quality programs, products and services to engage, inform, educate and entertain the public within its community and around the world. WQED Pittsburgh is one of the first broadcasters in the country to be fully high-definition (HD) in its studio and field production capabilities. It is the parent company of WQED-TV (PBS); WQED: The Neighborhood Channel; WQED: The Create Channel; Classical WQED-FM 89.3/Pittsburgh; WQEJ-FM 89.7/Johnstown; local and national television and radio productions; WQED Interactive (www.wqed.org); and The WQED Education Department.

Account Executive

Account Executive

The Account Executive is responsible for generating revenue for WQED Multimedia by developing and furthering relationships with clients to insure continued support for the organization's broadcast products and services.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and present proposals to meet pre-determined needs of client for presentations.
  • Write contract request forms.
  • Develop schedule of announcements and deliver to FM and Production Assistant for traffic placement.
  • Write announcements for client approval and deliver to FM traffic person and/or Production Assistant along with video components.
  • Develop promotional and/or underwriting ideas for clients.
  • Collect payment from clients.
  • Generate new business through targeting prospects.
  • Maintain up-to-date information of broadcast businesses as well as client business.
  • Develop a list of targeted media and matching prospect's needs with WQED program/strategies.
  • Contact prospective client – pre-determine needs and set up appointments.
  • Volunteer for station events and perform other company projects as needed.

Required education and skills:

  • Associate's Degree or equivalent experience is required. A Bachelor's Degree is preferred.
  • One year of sales and marketing experience, preferably in the broadcast industry, is required.
  • Candidate must have a working knowledge of sales techniques and broadcast industry sales along with excellent customer service and social media skills.

Development Associate

Reports to: Director of Development  

This position provides essential support to the Director of Development and the development team in a variety of ways related to cultivating major and mid-level donors.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Manage the mail solicitation of major and mid-level donors and business partners for renewal, additional and upgrade gifts to meet budgeted goals.
  • Manage cultivation and acknowledgement of major donors.
  • Write and produce donor correspondence including but not limited to: solicitations and acknowledgements.  Attention to detail and accuracy in the work product is crucial.
  • Develop and define major and mid-level file segmentation.
  • Analyze, manipulate and segment data and review for accuracy.  Make corrections as necessary in a timely manner.
  • Develop and implement an efficient and consistent mailing schedule.
  • Maintain mailing binder (complete with checklists and mail reports).
  • Build relationships with development constituents through improved donor service and benefits, donor surveys, and research.
  • Research other non-profits’ donor recognition societies and benefits; Review and make recommendations to update and enhance WQED’s development donor recognition societies.
  • Identify and coordinate special opportunities, experiences, benefits and other incentives to recognize and engage major donors. 
  • Continuously review, research, analyze, and update donor records to identify and refer potential candidates for major or planned gifts.
  • Prepare donor profiles and background information to support "ask" visits.
  • Participate in development of solicitation strategies and ask targets specific to an individual major donors.
  • Support the DOD in the writing and preparation of written proposals for major and planned donors.
  • Research major donors for the purpose of maintaining and increasing financial support to WQED.  This includes mailings, events, personal interactions, and data upkeep.
  • Research, identify, and qualify major and planned donor prospects.
  • Work with DOD to identify, upgrade, and steward mid-level donors.
  • Serve as an ambassador of WQED and network and represent WQED to the community and professional circles.
  • Assist with other fund-raising and related activities to contribute to the overall success of the department.
  • Inform others in the fund-raising department of development office issues and activities through meetings and reports.
  • Volunteer for and participate in organizational committees and events, as necessary.
  • Become familiar with and utilize PBS resources.
  • Support opportunities for major donors to volunteer.
  • Assist the DOD in supporting the development committee as needed.
  • Prepare reports and updates as needed for DOD and development team.
  • Collaborate with database support to develop best practices for running reports.
  • Regularly file and maintain donor records in the filing system.
  • Other tasks as needed.

Required education and skills:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 3-5 years of related experience required.
  • Must have the ability to multi-task.
  • This position requires excellent organizational, interpersonal, written communication, and analytical skills.
  • Strong database experience necessary (for example, Salesforce).
  • Proficiency in Word and Excel. 
  • Understanding about fundraising and donor relationships.

Multimedia Producer/Reporter/Host

This position will have diverse responsibilities including production of new digital-first video content, televised and web-based documentary length and shorter feature stories, hosting live, televised or web-based broadcasts, The person in this position will also participate in strategic planning for coverage and events.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Produce and report digital-first and interactive content. Contribute content to existing digital productions and generate ideas for new production and content.
  • Conceive ideas, set up shoots, conduct interviews, write, produce, narrate and execute new content, or supplemental content as it might relate to the duties noted in items one.
  • Coordinate these efforts with colleagues who are partners with you in handling social media and interactive content for optimal promotion and outreach. 
  • Produce full-length documentaries as assigned - as funding warrants.
  • Suggest story concepts, investigate content, coordinate shoots, conduct interviews, log, write script, narrate, oversee edit and all necessary steps leading up to broadcast, and after-broadcast duties related to the production.
  • Coordinate social media/interactive components as it relates to above. 
  • Foster community partnerships that complement and promote the project.
  • Host live and taped productions of discussion programs, community forums, town hall meetings, magazine programs and other assigned special broadcasts.
  • Research topics and be well-prepared to represent the station in a host/moderator role. Must be able to encourage and facilitate conversation, and challenge guests when appropriate. Have a strong knowledge of the region, community leaders, and local, regional and world events.
  • Coordinate social media/interactive components as related to above.
  • Foster community partnerships as it relates to hosting duties.
  • Cultivate and manage relationships with external partners as it relates to content and company projects. Represent the organization in the community.
  • Coordinate and attend meetings, conference calls, etc. - as needed - to maximize partner cooperation and assistance.        
  • Remain connected with - or knowledgeable of - potential partners for current and future endeavors.
  • Make personal appearances on behalf of WQED as approved.
  • Other duties as needed.
